Meet the Estuary Perch – Victoria’s Premier Lure Target
Often dubbed the “barramundi of the south,” estuary perch (EPs) are a prized catch among Victorian sportfishers, especially lure fanatics. Found predominantly in East Gippsland estuaries, these elusive, structure-loving predators offer exciting challenges for boat and land-based anglers alike.
🌊 Where to Find Them
EPs are nomadic and respond strongly to environmental conditions.
After rain? They push upstream into brackish or freshwater.
During dry spells? Look to the lower estuary or even adjacent coastal lakes.
Key habitat features: ✅ Snags ✅ Weed beds ✅ Undercut banks and creek junctions
They move in schools, so once you find one, don’t move—you’re likely on a hot bite!
🕐 Best Times to Target EPs
EPs are most aggressive during low-light periods:
Early morning
Late evening
Overcast days or at night
With their large, light-sensitive eyes, EPs are tailor-made for nocturnal hunting.
🎣 Effective Fishing Techniques
🪱 Live Bait
Float live minnows, shrimp, or crickets near structure. EPs hit hard and bolt into cover—be ready!
🧊 Lure Fishing
Soft Plastics: Rigged on light jig heads, cast into snags and hopped back slowly.
Suspending Crankbaits: Great around timber—just be ready to lose a few!
Surface Lures: Warm evenings call for cicada imitations, bent minnows, and other topwater treats.
