Catch Chinook Salmon in the South-West Victoria

🎯 How to Catch Chinook Salmon in the South-West
The Chinook salmon—a rare freshwater gem stocked into select southwest Victorian lakes—is an exciting and underrated target for Aussie anglers. Primarily found in Lake Purrumbete and Lake Bullen Merri. These lakes, also known as the “crater lakes”, are popular freshwater fisheries for both Chinook and Atlantic salmon, as well as trout. The Victorian Fisheries Authority has stocked these lakes with Chinook salmon over the years to establish these fisheries. Whether you’re trolling the depths of Lake Bullen Merri or casting from the banks of Lake Purrumbete, these fish hit hard and fight harder.

🚤 Boat Fishing Tips
Having a boat gives you a major advantage by accessing deeper water where Chinook salmon often hold. Two proven methods dominate:

1️⃣ Trolling to catch Chinook salmon
A reliable way to explore the lake and locate schools.

When: Early morning or late afternoon, especially near the surface in low light. As the sun climbs, target the thermocline.

Gear:

6–7 ft medium-action rod

2500-sized spin reel

3kg braid with 4kg leader

Lures: Tasmanian Devils, diving crankbaits, or pilchards rigged behind flashers or cowbells

Depth Control: Use paravanes, leadcore lines, or downriggers to get lures deeper.

2️⃣ Anchored Bait Fishing
Perfect when Chinook are schooled up and located via sounder.

Baits: Pilchards, glassies, or blue bait

Berley: Tuna oil and frozen logs to keep fish around

Hooks: Size #3 to 1/0, lightly weighted for natural presentation

🌳 Shore Fishing Tips
No boat? No stress—shore-based anglers can still catch Chinook with the right strategy.

1️⃣ Active Casting
Method: Work the shoreline with casts every 10–20m

Lures: Same as trolling—minnow-style cranks, spoons, or spinners

Timing: Focus on dawn, dusk, and overcast conditions

Tackle:

7–7.5 ft rod

2500-size reel

3kg braid, 4kg leader

2️⃣ Relaxed Bait Fishing to catch Chinook salmon.
Great for families and new anglers.

Baits: Worms, mudeyes, minnows, Powerbait, or small pilchards

Tips:

Use light sinkers or floats to avoid snagging weed

Always use a rod holder—Chinook can strike hard!

🧠 VTackle Pro Tip:
Look for schools of baitfish or rising fish—Chinook are predators and won’t be far behind. Berley and consistent casting will increase your odds!
